Document #45 Sponsorship/Approval Guidelines (Updated) [Clover] - Mar 17 2007
No specific law governs the sponsorship and approval of new citizens. The required age of sponsors and applicants is subject to change at the discretion of the magistrates. At present the age of sponsors is set at 20 days and of citizens at 10 days. These requirements may be changed by succeeding generations of magistrates.
There is likewise no stated "waiting period" between the sponsorship/application and the approval. However, the approving magistrate should make all reasonable inquiries among the applicant, the sponsor, and the citizenry to ensure that the applicant fits the needs and spirit of this Council.
It has been suggested that one magistrate should make the inquiries, post the results on the magistrate's board and possibly sponsor the citizen, and a second magistrate should actually approve the applicant.
As well, common sense and common law have always dictated that magistrates should not simultaneously be the sponsors and approvers of new citizens, nor should a magistrate approve a citizen who has no sponsor. Case #756 set the precedent of stiff fines (250 tooni per uncorroborated approval) for magistrates who transgress this principle.
