After several lackluster elections, the most recent Klatchian election was a welcome respite, both for the weary voters and for the desperate journalists. Not only were there enough candidates to make voting necessary, citizens had 14 options! Obviously there can be variety even in the abscence of capitalism.
The five officials elected are now Robgea and Fewms (29 votes each), Distran (26 votes), Echo (21 votes), and Sygon barely squeaking in with 15 votes. Close behind were Gwydion and Sepulchrave with 14 votes, and less successful nominees included Betta, Qiuyan, Kalam, Shmant, Nierra, Elera, and Surt.
First we look at Sultan Fewms Nicemelons (49), a most colourful character with a long and productive political career in Klatch. During a previous stint on the Council in 2007, Fewms authored official documents numbered 48 and 49, providing protection for madmen and employment opportunities for foreigners. In that same year he also amended Rule 309, detailing that at least 2 magistrates must approve if an eviction or inhumation punishment is to be applied. In UC 2023 and UC 2024 Fewms supported the addition of Gwydion, Ptoley, and Leyan to the honour roll, before receiving the same distinction himself in UC 2028. Fewms was created in 2004 and has been active 14 hours per month since then.
Next we examine Magistrate Distran Mindbender (255). Although he has served the great nation of Klatch for a great many years, he now makes his return as a magistrate. He is perhaps best known for managing the Vulgar Unicorn with considerable skill. He was added to the honour roll in UC 2027 in recognition of that contribution. Distran first came into existance in 2004 and is usually on for about 72 hours per month. Not bad!
Magistrate Echo (76) has previously served on the Klatch council, although not for many years. He supported adding Ptenisnet to the honour roll in UC 2021. He has existed since 2002 and is online a bit less than 17 hours per month.
Magistrate Robgea ibn Simurgh (54) is a relative newbie by Klatchian standards, having been created only in 2008. This is his first position in service of Klatch, and we are certain that old hands such as Echo will give the guidance he requires, in the unlikely event that should they ever happen to be online together at the same time. You might think that would be a simple thing to manage, as both are from the same area. Coincidentally, they also share the same birthday - perhaps we should have an official Magistrates Day holiday on April 14th to celebrate all of our magistrates. Robgea spends almost 36 hours per month online, though this may decrease should he keep avoiding the Disc when Echo is on!
Finally we reach Sultan Sygon (27), also a former magistrate from many (many) years ago. He penned the Rules 315 and 316 in 2002, officially outlawing corruption in the Klatchian justice system. In UC 2017 he supported the addition of Sabia, Sachi, and Githan to the honour roll, before being added himself in 2018. Sygon has long been very inactive however, just like his well-known alts Cortico and the former Jabba. In fact, Sygon was too idle to receive mail after being elected magistrate.
Sultan Sygon may be a somewhat controversial choice as magistrate, due to both his idleness and his extreme notoriety as Jabba. Under that name, he made quite an impact on the PK world by reaching hitherto unimagined levels of gittishness until he was eventually banished sometime between 1998 and 1999. In 1998 he made a splash in the Osrics, "winning" the categories of Number Chaser, Board Addicted, Least Popular Player, and In Need of a Clue. His followup performance in the 1999 Osrics saw him do no better than reaching 7th place in the Most Missed Category, followed by almost complete obscurity in the 2000 and 2001 Osrics. Sygon has been around since 2000, and spends less than 5 hours per month online - and most of it not recently.
It could prove to be a most interesting council. While it has been somewhat normal to only have 3 active magistrates in any given term, this may well be the first time that the council has had two magistrates with so many similarties (aside from login times) serving at the same time, and a third magistrate that was inactive before, during, and after the elections.
