The current term of service is ending for the Magistrates of Djelibeybi. I asked them the following questions, so that they might share their wisdom gained thus far during their service to the city:
The Papyrus: Did you enjoy your past term as a magistrate?
Narf MacPing tells you: Yes, definitely. There were some tough cases tried, and we've really been working hard at figuring out state finances. There was quite a bit of excitement, with intense pk issues, great new title punishments, and the introduction of council assassinations.
Leyan al Mahd tells you: Enjoy? Well it's been a busy term and I think we achieved some good things but to enjoy it I think you'll have to be a masochist.
Fewms tells you: Yes.
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: it had its ups and downs, but overall it was an enriching experience.
The Papyrus: What was the biggest challenge you faced?
Narf MacPing tells you: Well there was a pk-related situation early in the term, where the magistracy came under attack by counter-revolutionary forces opposed to the dictatorship of the people. It was a challenging situation, but by strenuously opposing enemies of Pharaoh and the worker's collective, internal enemies were rooted out and a peaceful situation was restored.
Leyan al Mahd tells you: Finding the time to perform my duties, rw life hasn't been good on me this year. Part of the term I didn't have an internet connection so I spent quite a lot of time at the library or commandeering my friends computers.
Fewms tells you: Two challenges, I think. The first was the attempt to bring Mcleod to justice after a protracted battle in and out of court. The second was to hold on to our Bank franchises, while expanding our banking endeavor.
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: I'd have to say achieving the balance between Magistrate life and Personal life... some of the cases this term hit close to home.
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: I'm also disappointed in the lack of legal reform we had discussed. I feel the Magistrates were just warming up as the term began wrapping up.
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: it was much more difficult than expected to write or rewrite a law in such a way that noone could object.
The Papyrus: What has been your greatest contribution to Djelibeybi as a magistrate?
Narf MacPing tells you: Currently, there has been some discussion of financial compensation for the heroic workers in our People's Collective. There has also been some discussion of the sovereinty of the workers as Klatchians, and whether workers who are not offical citizens of our nation, yet are sympathetic to the revolution, should be allowed to work with us. These situations have also been quite challenging.
Narf MacPing tells you: I have tried to serve Klatch primarily as an arbiter. I believe my greatest contributions are to be found in the case history.
Leyan al Mahd tells you: It's hard to name a single event, eveything is important wether it's approving people for citizenship or taking part in the creation of new laws.
Fewms tells you: I negotiated the first bank branch on the Counterweight Continent, which I was very proud of. I also established our interbank shuttle service which I hope will make it profitable to expand the PBK to outlying regions of the Disc. And I helped to settle the Mcleod case, which threatened to blossom into a low grade war. Of course I always acted with the support and assistance of many of our fine Citizens.
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: I think my availability was a benefit to to other Magistrates as well as to the citizens of Djelibeybi... I oversaw many of the admission of many of the applicants for citizenship, and found many strong and opinionated citizens for Djelibeybi.
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: I think the proceeds from my private fund-raiser was the greatest one-time donation to the treasury to date.
The Papyrus: Do you plan to run for re-election?
Narf MacPing tells you: Yes, unless there are five candiates that I believe more competent to serve Klatch in the magistracy.
Leyan al Mahd tells you: I do and I have already accepted my nomination. However if I'm elected it'll be my last term.
Leyan al Mahd tells you: There are some unresolved issues I want to stay on for but after that I'm going to need some vacation.
Fewms tells you: No, I will not run this term. Although Magistrating is rewarding, I feel it is time to let a new set of people with fresh ideas address some of our current challenges. I will be happy to serve in a consultant role, if called upon, and would not rule out running again in the future.
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: and yes, I will stand for election. I don't plan to campaign as vigorously, to see if the populace really wants someone like me on the Board.
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: I do hope to be re-elected ;)
The Papyrus: What qualifications do you think a potential magistrate should have?
Narf MacPing tells you: Many different types of citizen is needed in the magistracy. The only real requirement is serious intention to serve Klatch to the best of one's capacity.
Leyan al Mahd tells you: A level head and a lot of time to dedicate to the council.
Fewms tells you: I believe they should be very active, so as to be available for negotiations, court cases, and to deal with Citizens that have concerns and ideas. Secondly, they should be tolerant, diplomatic, and have a good sense of humor especially about themselves. This will help immensely in negotiating with other people.
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: I think candidates should be active citizens with experience in an appropriate field, such as finance, guild politics, PK lifestyles, etc...
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: they should be strong communicators as well as deep thinkers.
The Papyrus: What would you do with your next term as Magistrate?
Narf MacPing tells you: I will continue to serve Pharaoh and the revolution in whatever capacity is required of me.
Leyan al Mahd tells you: As I mentioned earlier there are some issues that needs resolving.
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: I think I would try and re-poll the populace on a few issues, and see if we could rewrite a law or two.
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: I'm most interested in some of our foreign relations, as well... I would like to see our place amongst our neighbours recognized.
Ptoley pteh Pterrible tells you: I also think a review of some of our laws is also in order... but enough of that.
