On December 29th, Citizens and other people, plus a few witches, came to the Palace gardens for a party to celeberate the Least Hot Day of the year. Included in the planned festivities were the Witch Ptrials, and an auction of the hand-scribed, unique copies of the eighth edition The Papyrus newspaper.
The organisers were Magistrate Ptoley and Magistrate Leyan. Although Leyan showed up early, he also started drinking our hearty Klatchian wine early, and seemed unconscious by the time most guests had arrived. Ptoley was a late arrival, due to wardrobe requirements for himself and his escort. Magistrate Gwydion also appeared eventually, sporting a new last name and the same bronze slippers as Editor in Chief Elera (how embarassing!).
WORST DRESSED
Master Coffeebreak AlQuantum appeared in the following attire, committing the fashion faux-pas of too many items attempting to match, and the even worse faux-pas of not quite managing to match:
Wearing : a pair of black soft-soled boots, a durable pair of elegant crimson silk gloves, Bubble Wrap, Mind, a crimson wizard's pointy hat, a ruby red silk mask, a Flaming Cabbage brooch, a keyring necklace, two small leather neck pouches, a red badge, a silver rose pin, three club badges, a Philosophers' Society pin, a midnight rose, a mirrored timepiece and a twisted black amulet.
Young Cassiopeia O'lalah, on the other hand, made a vague attempt to appear Djelian with no concept of Djelian clothing, and grossly over-accessorised:
Wearing : a shimmering bellydancer's skirt, a deep red silk backpack, a staff harness, a pointy black hat, a ruby engagement ring, a silver river bracelet, a red badge, an imp-powered watch, a keyring necklace, a club badge, a pair of pink tinted sunglasses, a cloudy pink crystal teardrop necklace, a blackened canteen, a pair of fluffy cat ears and a twisted black amulet.
Topping them both was the pair of Ptara pteh Terrible and Magistrate Ptoley pteh Terrible. While alone their faults might have stopped at an overzealous fondness for jewellery and the colour black, their coordinated appearance compounded their sins, vaulting them to first place in this unenvied catagory:
Wearing : a black cobra armband, a pair of clinging black trousers, a midnight black satin bodice, a scanty black chiffon veil, two silver rings, a white gold wedding ring, a wedding ring and a pair of jade star earrings.
Wearing : a pair of alligator boots, a pair of black leather trousers, a midnight black silk vest, a close-fitting black leather bag, a low black turban, a Philosophers' Society pin, two wedding rings, a sun pendant, a black diamond nostril stud, four club badges, a pair of mirrored sunglasses, a gold earring and an ivory ring.
BEST DRESSED
Batflower du Sucre, despite clothing in black, kept it simple enough that it was not overbearing, and offset it with jewellery of different colours to offer variety:
Wearing : a pair of black silk shoes, a pair of tight black leather trousers, a durable feminine black leather bodice, a large backpack, a small satchel, a black silk pointy hat with a veil, Barfire, a keyring necklace, a silver necklace, a black choker with a silver teardrop pendant, a silver cat anklet, a yellow stone ring, an ivory faced watch, a twisted black amulet, a moonstone silver bracelet and a ruby ring.
Dodgy Danduin made a respectably fashionable appearance, sporting variety in the colour of clothing while maintaining a continuity in hue:
His hair has been drawn back into a deceptively simple ponytail.
Wearing : a pair of black buckled shoes, a pair of black velvet trousers, a silvery grey damask silk waistcoat, a crispplain-front white shirt, a silvery grey damask silk cravat, a keyring necklace, an iridescent scarab beetle, two thief's dagger scabbards, two ninjato scabbards, a Philosophers' Society pin, an autumn garnet ring, a stealth watch, an onyx brooch and a lapis lazuli ring.
Lanore managed to pull off the most impressive clothing for the day, and though there was a lot going on, she kept it simple and plain enough to look stunningly elegant:
Her hair has been braided into a trendy, and frankly astonishing, Genuan pleat and subsequently decorated with pin sized diamonds.
Her features have been artfully enhanced with dusty coal eyeshadow, a dash of shimmering dew drop lipstick, some dark mascara and eyeliner.
Her nails have been beautifully shaped and filed, and then buffed to a stunning satin finish.
Her bosom heaves like an overwrought Uberwaldean romance.
Holding : a black dragon fan (left hand).
Wearing : a pair of gold peep-toed shoes, a rich creamy satin purse, a pleated pale gold evening dress, a Say Ko watch, a white rose, a heart shaped locket, a gold auriental name necklace, a wooden bracelet, a pair of black pearl earrings, a pearl bracelet and a wedding ring.
DJELIAN WITCH PTRIALS
The first event of the party was the Ptrials, in which Batflower, Cassiopeia, Caya, and Elspeth participated:
Black Elspeth the Scottish says: Elspeth Summons a lover
Black Elspeth the Scottish says: hmmm I need my bat
Black Elspeth the Scottish holds up cured Gammer Smith apple in front of her face and summons a quill, which appears in midair.
Black Elspeth the Scottish enchants the quill and it enscribes Master Coffeebreak AlQuantum's name on the apple with vicious hacking motions.
Black Elspeth the Scottish curses the apple and gives it a withering look. It rots and disintegrates to dust.
Master Coffeebreak AlQuantum goes gooey eyed at Elspeth and falls helplessly in love with her. This only lasts a few seconds though (like most men eh?) so she is free to find another vic... Lover.
Batflower du Sucre says: Batflower's combat break - it's for when I'm mocking a group
Batflower du Sucre summons the sun to give her heat and gracefully gathers this warmth between her hands.
Charming the air to do her bidding, Batflower du Sucre slowly moves her fingers to trace the outline of your body causing the air to spin around you in undulating waves that caress you from head to toe.
Spiraling her hands, Batflower du Sucre channels her energy to the wind wrapping it in a tight cocoon around you squeezing every muscle in your body then releasing you again, banishing all tension from you and leaving you relaxed and strong again.
You are moved to pay her generously then be on your way.
Young Cassiopeia O'lalah says: Cassiopeia's Confectionary Imp
Young Cassiopeia O'lalah removes her pointy black hat and squints menacingly at it. She twirls it around her head and summons a small imp that blinks up at her with a confused expression. .
Young Cassiopeia O'lalah taps the imp lightly with her hat, binding it to her will. The imp places a chefs hat on its head and gets a mixing bowl from places you don't want to imagine.
The small imp waves its hands over its mixing bowl then gives Cassiopeia a cupcake. She eats it with a content sigh and banishes the imp back to her hat.
Black Caya HikosaSan says: ummm... it's called Caya's Just Plain Adorable Bunny
You corner Black Caya HikosaSan, knowing it is way easier to force her to do things instead of charming her. You laugh very hard when you see her attempting to hide behind a teacup.
In a blink of an eye, Black Caya HikosaSan fades into thin air. You wave around madly, trying to find her. You turn around and see a tiny little white bunny with a small puffy tail and a wiggling pink nose. Awww.... You cuddle the bunny closely.
With an inhuman, maniacal giggle, the bunny takes out an enormous chainsaw(from its top hat) and buzzes off all your body parts!
While licking her tiny lips, the bunny daintily adjusts her bib and takes out her tiny fork and knife...
The judges ruled that all tricks were exemplerary, and each witch was awarded three royals as a prize.
THE PAPYRUS AUCTION
Two hand-scribed copies of The Papyrus newspaper were auctioned off, one scribed in Morporkian and one in Djelian. The copies also contained the signature of several magistrates, as well as the Editor in Chief.
Bidding started at 10 talents (A$50) for the Morporkian copy, and quickly reached 60 talents (A$300) in an intense flurry of bids. Lanore then put an end to the contention, bidding a stunning 100 talents (A$500), and winning the Morporkian copy.
Bidding then began at 50 talents (A$250) for the Djelian copy, and Magistrates Gwydion and Ptoley fought back and forth to place the highest bid. Bidding stalled at 70 talents ($A350) offered by Gwydion, but at the last moment Ptoley bid 80 talents (A$400), outclassing the competition.
Total money raised from the auction was 180 talents (A$900), ensuring a prosperous future for The Papyrus!
