Djelian Characters
By a Wretched Scribe In Green
Ptom - Ptom is a fleeting face in the crowds wandering Djelibeybi's streets. His name - modelled after various animals or abstract nouns - always begins with 'Pt-'. He is polite, good-natured, and drifts aimlessly. Newbiehood and unobsessed equanimity, expressed alternately, make of him a pamphlet as edifying as he is diverting to study.
Ptapius - Ptapius is a Ptom who has gained more experience. The name of Ptom has proved a lightning rod; benignly electrified, he has acquired more experience, and knows his way around Djelibeybi's obscurer corners rather well. The letters of his original name have been distorted by the heaven-flung stroke into PTAPIUS, and burnt as such into the recollection of the Djelian Citizenry, whose number he has recently joined. As a rule, his poses are not superior to those of his Djelian-affecting newbiehood.
Pmagus - Pmagus is the typical wizard of the Institute of Illusory Learning. His Order has been closed to new applicants for a long time, so Pmagus has been around for some time. He only numberchases naively, or if semi-retired from roleplaying. (The one exception to this being Ptzyr, a wizard of distant antiquity, reputed to be the only powerful, number-chasing Pmagus ever.) Pmagus often subjects Djelibeybi Council to his machinations, possibly because the Institute is without a distracting hierarchy, and because, being a wizard, he is interested in the Structure of Things, and how to rearrange it. Pmagii are a microcosm of Djelian society; a xenophobic collective within a xenophobic collective. The Djelian magistracy has traditionally been mostly Pmagii at any one time.
Ptimothy - Ptimothy is at once idle and paranoid. He is generally of the Hashishim, a guild given to drugs, introspection and secrecy. When grouping, he insists that his groupmates walk in front of him so that he can keep an eye on them and be sure that they will not desert him in the middle of a difficult battle. When a Magistrate answers one of his questions, he will gaze at him fearfully and say, "But you are answering like a politician!" His watchword is, "To think, to discern, is to become suspect."
Psteerpike - Psteerpike is the exemplar of courtier-like spies. He is familiar enough to make others wary, which he regrets, yet he is enigmatic enough to remain useful in espionage, which he exploits. No one blames him for being what it is, but some resent him for pretending to be what he is. He is a member of the 'permanent conspiracy of smiles', and is so guarded that he appears careless. He is betrayed by his involuntary shudder at those who decline to conspire with him. If you escape his snares, he figures that he is about to fall into yours.
Pmagnus - Pmagnus is vain. He joined Djelibeybi Council because he could not countenance the thought of being part of a rabble. His fashions are uselessly splendid, and he longs to be a Sultan. He assumes the worst of everyone, because secretly he thinks himself the worst of the worst; paradoxically, it is this that gives him a tolerant and benign disposition, for nothing that is repellent in anyone's nature surprises him. He is amazed and consternated by Pmarcus, however, whose maturity and philosophical acumen he envies.
Pminion - Pminion is a ready pawn of Djelibeybi's factions. He is non-political, and therefore the most easily moved of all political pieces. The faction acquiring Pminion's loyalty might echo the Sultan's exultant reply to the philosopher who wondered by what right he claimed exclusive possession of the Fountain of Youth: "I found it *first*."
Pgodwot - Pgodwot is a priest of Djelibeybi. In a theocratic monarchy, you would expect Pgodwot to be prideful, but, surprisingly, he rarely exceeds grandiose pretense. If he advances toward you whilst manically cackling, or mutters barbarous words apparently designed to command the awful crocodile, it is offbeat humour, deprecating his militantly brahminical place in traditional Djelian society. Pgodwot generally comes from abroad, and most often serves the evil spectrum of deities, though Pishe's cult is a strong possibility. Godwot tends to involve himself in Djelian politics, second only to Pmagus in this respect.
Ptedant - Ptedant is a machine inconvenienced with a soul. Having been a Magistrate, either presently or in the past, he has devolved into the worst sort of bureaucrat, which is the one that takes himself seriously. If inhumed, he will remark to the Pishite whom he imperiously summons, "How could they? I am one of the members of the great machine of State!"
Pmarcus - Pmarcus is a philosopher. He is not often involved in politics, for he knows that it is a disreputable passtime. His profession of faith is: "I am not political". He is self-sufficient, but not proud; unable to be fooled, but does not suspect deception. He is rarely seen for more than a half hour at a time, making it miraculous that he has reached the ten days required for him to seek Djelian citizenship. He is intelligent and unobsessed. When he does play at politics, he is highly effective, and makes enemies only of those annoyed at his unalloyed perfection.
Ptwo-Face - Ptwo-Face is unreliable. Capricious, she will undertake any venture put to her, but none can predict how she will end it. Generally she is a witch. She is capable of benevolence, discourtesy, recklessless, but in no particular order. She is quite illogical, a living coin flung into the air; as she spins, she is most herself - neither of the two sides whose uppermost face shall show when she lands can be trusted.
Psahasasin - Psahasasin is a member of the Hashishim. Psahasasin is vague and oblivious. As the Hashishim are portrayed in fiction, he really is, or affects to be. It is rare that he will stir to inhume someone only a few streets away. Most of his time is spent ingesting hasheesh and contemplating his sacred daggers. He occasionally wanders the city, or the surrouding deserts, steppes and jungles, but forgetfully and without purpose. He is sometimes involved in Djelian politics, but even there, he appears to have stumbled into it. He perceives all things through an addled haze.
